Abstract
Lady Brilliana Harley (1598–1643) is largely known as a prolific letter‐writer. She is the author of nearly 400 extant letters, dating between 1622 and 1643 – an astonishingly large surviving corpus compared to many well‐known sixteenth‐ and early seventeenth‐century women writers – as well as a commonplace book, begun in 1622, and a book of ‘devout Meditations’, dated to 1628. These surviving manuscripts display Harley's intellectual character, with her pen keenly on the pulse of the literary, political, theological, and cultural controversies of early Stuart England. They provide valuable access to her intelligent and dynamic character, to the spirited role she played in religious and political negotiation in Herefordshire, and testify to the remarkable bravery and leadership she displayed in defence of Brampton Bryan castle during two sieges, in the summer and autumn of 1643. She died on 29 October, ‘of a greate coold’.
