Abstract
The life and career of Émile Durkheim (1858–1917), the founder of French sociology, can be easily divided into a few main periods: (1) childhood and education, at college and École Normale Supérieure, obtaining hisagrégationin philosophy in 1882; (2)lycéeteacher (Puy, de Sens, Saint‐Quentin) – his nickname wasChopen– and, after a period in Germany, at the Lycée de Troies (1884–1887); (3) a chargé de cours and professor of social science and pedagogy at Bordeaux (1887–1904); (4) an appointment in 1902 at the Sorbonne,suppléantof Ferdinand Buisson for the Science of Education, and in 1913 as professor of the science of education and sociology; and (5) World War I.
