Abstract
Elizabeth Barrett Browning was the most internationally influential English women poet of the nineteenth century. Her formally innovative works in diverse genres include epic, dramatic monologues, ballads, sonnets, lyrics, lyrical dramas, polemical political poems, odes, and classical translations. She first established a transatlantic reputation at mid‐career as “Elizabeth Barrett Barrett” with Poems (1844), after three earlier collections manifesting her response to formative Romantic movements, themes, and authors. Sonnets from the Portuguese (1850), altering a predominantly male amatory sonnet tradition, has been translated into multiple languages. Like her epic verse‐novel Aurora Leigh (1856), which influenced writers, intellectuals, and activists in Europe and North America, her poetry is often deeply engaged with issues central to her times: factory reform, the abolition of slavery, Italian nation‐building, religious and aesthetic debates, and women's rights. Other works explore the er registers of personal experience: the risks of love, religious doubt, private grief.
