Cette publication a été préparée en accompagnement d’une exposition présentée en 2008 au Historisches Museum im Marstall à Paderborn ainsi qu’au Mainfränkisches Museum à Würzburg. L’exposition elle-même dévoilait les résultats obtenus lors de fouilles archéologiques à Ballhorn en Westphalie et à Karlburg près de Würzburg, deux sites du haut Moyen Âge.
