Abstract
Significance The controversy may have had an impact on three by-elections held on February 25, only one of which Trudeau's Liberals won. Although held only in three ridings (constituencies), the by-elections are one of the latest barometers of political feeling ahead of Canada’s next federal election, due by October 21. Impacts The new People’s Party of Canada could split the Conservatives’ vote somewhat. Foreign affairs could be an area where the governing Liberals could galvanise their support. The NDP would likely offer the Liberals a confidence and supply deal under a minority government. If the SNC-Lavalin matter deepens, it will weaken Trudeau’s authority, but he is unlikely to resign.
