Abstract
Ce chapitre traite très largement de la situation socioéconomique du Canada rural et expose brièvement la stratégie nationale en faveur du développement rural1. Après la présentation d’une typologie régionale, il compare les régions rurales du Canada à d’autres régions rurales de l’OCDE en termes de compétitivité économique. La section 1.1 se concentre sur les tendances démographiques, tandis que les sections suivantes engagent une discussion sur les relations rurales/urbaines et le bien-être social dans le pays. Les sections 1.4 et 1.5 décrivent le cadre économique et les enjeux environnementaux du Canada rural. Enfin, la dernière section présente les principaux enjeux du développement rural dans le pays et la stratégie nationale mise en place pour promouvoir le développement rural, et discute de quelques unes des limites de l’approche canadienne.
