Abstract
No other decade in the history of figure skating includes a longer list of World champions than the 1970s. Fifteen skaters, seven men and eight ladies, took those honors, with only two from each discipline repeating. Pair skating, however, was dominated almost completely by one skater, the incomparable Irina Rodnina, who with two partners won ten World Championships and three Olympic gold medals. In ice dancing, three couples won World titles, and one became the discipline's first Olympic gold medalists as well. This chapter profiles these exceptional skaters which include Ondrej Nepela (1951–89) of Czechoslovakia, Robin Cousins (b. 1957) of Britain, Toller Cranston (b. 1949) of Canada, Beatrix “Trixi” Schuba (b. 1951) of Austria, and Dorothy Hamill (b. 1956) of the United States.
