Abstract
Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation was launched in 1996. It is part of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of organ transplantation is divided into 18 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor and Section Editors for this issue. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Linda S. SherLinda S. SherDr Sher is Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery and Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Abdominal Organ Transplantation at Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC), USA. After completing her medical school education and surgical residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, USA, Dr Sher undertook her fellowship training in Liver and Kidney Transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. After completing her fellowship in 1988, Dr Sher was involved in the establishment of two liver transplant programs in Los Angeles prior to joining the USC program in 2001. Dr Sher has participated in and overseen over 50 research projects and is currently very active in the development of the clinical and basic science research components of the USC Abdominal Organ Transplantation Program. She has numerous publications on immunosuppression, chronic rejection, disease recurrence, infection, prophylaxis and hepatobiliary surgery. Dr Sher is one of the original editors of Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation and has endeavored over the years to provide the reader with an up to date overview of the entire field of organ transplantation. ASSOCIATE EDITORS Josep M. Grinyo’Josep M. Grinyo’Josep Grinyó, MD, PhD, is the Chief of Nephrology at the University Hospital of Bellvitge, Spain, and Full Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona, Department of Medicine, Spain. Dr Grinyó's research work on renal transplantation has been focused on immunosuppression, ischemia-reperfusion injury and chronic allograft damage in the clinical setting and in experimental animal models. Josep Grinyó is Associate Editor of Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation, and Transplant International; Consulting Editor of the American Journal of Transplantation and member of the editorial boards of Transplantation and Kidney International. Josep Grinyó has authored or coauthored over 300 articles and given more than 200 invited lectures. Jerzy W. Kupiec-WeglinskiJerzy W. Kupiec-WeglinskiDr Kupiec-Weglinski graduated from Warsaw Medical Academy in 1974, and received his PhD at the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1979 he joined the Transplant Research Laboratories, Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Since 1997, Dr Kupiec-Weglinski has been the Director of Dumont- University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Transplant Research Laboratories in Los Angeles, USA. He is Professor of Surgery and Pathology, and Vice-Chairman, Department of Surgery (Research), at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He holds the Joan S. and Ralph N. Goldwyn Endowed Chair in Transplantation Research. Dr Kupiec-Weglinski's interests focus on the immunobiology of organ ischemia and reperfusion injury, host sensitization, and tolerance induction. He has authored over 400 papers. He is Associate Editor of Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation and serves as a member of the editorial board of Transplantation, Liver Transplantation, Transplantation Immunology, and Annals of Transplantation, among others. His research for the last 25 years has been funded by National Institute of Health (NIH) and he is currently a standing member of the Transplantation, Tolerance and Tumor Immunology (TTT) NIH Study Section. Dr Kupiec-Weglinski is a past member of the board of directors of the American Society of Transplantation, and recipient of AST/Astellas Established Investigator Award in Basic Transplant Research. He holds the Honorary Doctorate (“Honoris Causa”) from Medical Academy in Warsaw, and is the Foreign Member of Polish Academy of Sciences. SECTION EDITORS Fadi G. LakkisFadi G. LakkisDr Fadi Lakkis received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and his fellowship training in nephrology and transplantation immunology at the Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School, USA. After serving on the faculty of Emory University, USA (1992 – 2001) and Yale University, USA (2001 – 2005), Dr Lakkis joined the University of Pittsburgh, USA, in 2005 as the Frank and Athena Sarris Chair in Transplantation Biology and the Scientific Director of the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute. Funded by the NIH, work in Dr Lakkis's laboratory is focused on two fundamental areas of transplantation immunology: (1) allorecognition in the innate immune system, using both invertebrate and vertebrate models of transplantation; and (2) the biology of memory T cells in organ transplantation in experimental animals and humans. Dr Lakkis has received several awards in recognition of his research. He was the recipient of the Young Investigator Award of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) in 2002 and the American Society of Transplantation Basic Science Established Investigator Award in 2009. He is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (2002) and the American Association of Physicians (2008). Dr Lakkis has also served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Transplantation. Giuseppe RemuzziGiuseppe RemuzziGiuseppe Remuzzi, MD – Bergamo, Italy. Actually Professor of Nephrology, Director of the Department of Medicine of the Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo (Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital), Italy and Director of the Division of Nephrology and Dialysis of the same hospital. He also directs the Negri Bergamo Laboratories of the “Mario Negri” Institute for Pharmacological Research, a group of basic scientists and clinicians devoted to the study of human renal diseases and their corresponding animal models from the perspective of pathophysiology and therapeutic intervention. He touched major advances in many areas of nephrology. For example, his studies have led to new insights into many disorders, including the interactions between platelets and endothelium, pathophysiology of glomerular diseases and the factors that influence the progressive loss of kidney function. Work focused on improving the outlook for patients with end stage renal disease. Giuseppe Remuzzi pays tribute to the work of pioneers such as Barry Brenner, who delved deep into the processes behind glomerular function and their possible reversibility. Early work on the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors to slow the decline of glomerular filtration rates proved dialysis was avoidable, not inevitable. Studies on immunologic mechanisms that influence the survival of transplanted organs, understanding of immunologic tolerance in the disorders that are linked to autoimmunity and finally, genetic diseases of the kidney have also been areas of investigation. Concerned by kidney donation shortages and deploring the current practice of discarding suboptimal donor kidneys, his team has shown that transplanting such kidneys in pairs is feasible and have set up an international effort to validate this approach. Giuseppe Remuzzi is investigating the kidney's ability to regenerate itself. He authored and co-authored more than 1201 scientific articles, reviews and monographs and serves on editorial boards of numerous journals, he is member of the International Advisory Board of The Lancet and has been an Editorial Board member of the New England Journal of Medicine since 1995. During his professional career he received the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) Jean Hamburger Award (World Congress of Nephrology (WCN) 2005, Singapore), the John P. Peters Award (American Society of Nephrology (ASN) 2007, San Francisco) and the ISN AMGEN Award (WCN 2011, Vancouver). In November 2011, he won the Third Edition of the International Award “Luis Hernando” assigned by the Iñigo Alvarez de Toledo Renal Foundation (FRIAT) in Madrid, Spain. He has, since June 2013, been President of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) for the period of 2013-2015. Dorry L. SegevDorry L. SegevDorry Segev, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University, where he is a clinically active abdominal transplant surgeon and Associate Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Surgery. He is the founding director of the Epidemiology Research Group in Organ Transplantation at Johns Hopkins, where he leads research focusing on clinical outcomes, access to transplantation, disparities, and policy. Dr. Segev has published approximately 200 articles in journals including JAMA, NEJM, and The Lancet. His work has been featured extensively in the media, including the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, and a feature in TIME magazine's “Innovator” issue. He is an Associate Editor for American Journal of Transplantation, Liver Transplantation, and American Journal of Kidney Diseases and is an inducted member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation.
