Abstract
Ectopic gallbladders, duplication or triplication of the gallbladder and even gallbladder agenesis with biliary symptoms can all contribute to the therapeutic difficulty in a patient with acute cholecystitis. Obstruction of the cystic duct by a calculus is most often the cause of acute cholecystitis, but it can also be caused by blood clots or infectious organisms in immunosuppressed patients. Laparoscopy was originally contraindicated in the setting of acute cholecystitis and reserved for purely elective procedures in the setting of biliary colic. Additionally, Boo et al. studied inflammatory markers in patients randomized to open versus laparoscopic cholecystectomy in acute cholecystitis. In 2008, G. Borzellino et al. completed a meta-analysis of outcomes for patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy for severe acute cholecystitis, defined by the presence of empyema or emphysematous gallbladder. In 2014, de Mestral et al. published a retrospective cohort study of Canadian patients presenting with acute cholecystitis.
