Abstract
Christine Fauré, Doléances, Declarations, and Petitions, three Forms of Public Expression of Women under the Revolution. The forms of protest used by women during the Revolution correspond to a social and political affirmation. From the doleance, imitative of official texts, at times a parody, to the individual and collective exercise of the right to petition, one notes an evolution in the codification of expression. The emergence of women's rights, defended by women, stemming from personal, often tragic situations, symbolizes a new relationship between femininity and power. However, the petitioners did not speak freely in the assemblies, and the letter to the legally constituted authorities, to be retained by the assembly, must conform to accepted protocols that normalize the content of their demands. From 1789 on, a new style of petition emerged, one that favored the evocation and expression of emotions rather than the art of demonstration. Popular with women of the people, « l'offrande patriotique » expresses the difficulty of employing a rationalistic style too far removed from their cultural values.
