Abstract
Entre 1948 et 1960, Aimé Césaire et Suzanne Césaire se sont inspirés de la victorieuse insurrection antiesclavagiste du 22 mai 1848 en Martinique. Ils ont tous deux fondé leurs productions sur une lecture d'un roman de Lafcadio Hearn dans lequel Youma, une nourrice esclave, choisit de mourir avec ses maîtres pendant la révolte. Dans son texte à propos de Victor Schoelcher (1948) comme dans ses poèmes « Mot » (1950) et « Statue de Lafcadio Hearn » (1955-1960), Aimé Césaire installe le lecteur au coeur d'une insurrection nègre où officie le quimboiseur que Hearn avait méprisé. Le manuscrit d'Aurore de la liberté (1952), la pièce de Suzanne Césaire, est perdu. Cependant, l'analyse de deux recensions restées inexploitées montre que les représentations constituent une révolution esthétique. Ces deux inestimables documents révèlent aussi que la dramaturge a changé la fin du roman de Hearn : rebaptisée Marie, Youma se joint à la révolte de 1848. Contrairement à Aimé Césaire, Suzanne Césaire investit le personnage de la da, sortant de l'oubli les domestiques esclaves tués le 22 mai 1848.
