In a recent article in the Guardian’s ‘review’ section, Sarah Crown describes the shifting landscape of British poetry.1 As she notes, interest in poetry is undergoing a resurgence, in part spearheaded by the success of Instapoets such as Yrsa Daley-Ward, Lang Leav, Nikita Gill, and, in particular, Indian-born Canadian poet Rupi Kaur, whose two collections have sold in the hundreds of thousands. Crown believes that the reason for this revival is the democratisation of poetry; the Internet, social media, and spoken-word events are opening up poetry to new audiences and providing a non-elitist platform for people to turn to poetry as a means to respond to the current political climate and the most urgent concerns of the day, whether they be Brexit, the #MeToo movement, crises of government, or the environment.
