Abstract
Vibrators of the modern electromechanical form were invented in the late nineteenth century as medical devices. They became popular personal‐care devices by 1900, and began to appear in pornography as sex toys in the 1920s. In the 1960s and 1970s they became symbols of feminist views of sexuality. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, four states banned their sale; all but one of these laws has been successfully challenged.
