Ancienne, la notion de race et ses significations n’ont jamais cessé d’évoluer. Nous pouvons retrouver dans l’histoire une classification des « races humaines » qui entraina de nombreux débats entre les polygénistes et monogénistes (opposition entre plusieurs espèces humaines et une seule) ainsi que de nombreuses tensions et injustices. Aujourd’hui, il est déterminé qu’il existe une unité génétique dans l’espèce humaine mais qu’il existerait également des différences entre les origines, sans rapport de supériorité.
