Abstract
Encore aujourd'hui, le premier titre de gloire de Giannantonio Campano demeure sa contribution la vie culturelle du pontificat de Pie II. C'est principalement grce aux citations rcurrentes de ses pigrammes dans les Commentaires 1 de ce pontife, ainsi qu' l'importante oraison funbre qu'il pronona lors des obsques du pape 2 , que l'humaniste originaire du Mezzogiorno se trouve encore frquemment associ l'entourage de son ami et bienfaiteur siennois. Nomm vque de Crotone en 1462, puis de Teramo ds l'anne suivante, Campano bnficia largement du patronage de ce pontife humaniste. Les 672 vers adresss Pie dans l'dition principale de ses Carmina 3 tmoignent aussi du fait qu'il n'hsita gure chanter la gloire -et demander le soutien -de son patron et confrre qui l'apprcia rellement pour ses talents considrables. La critique a bien montr, la suite des remarques de Paparelli et de Flavio di Bernardo dans sa biographie de Campano 4 , que celui-ci loue avec ardeur et loquence le protecteur
