Abstract
Subject Italian debt sustainability. Significance Italy's ISTAT reported yesterday that GDP fell by 0.2% quarter-on-quarter in October-December after contracting by 0.1% in July-September, meaning the country is in official recession for the first time since 2014. This could further worsen relations between Brussels and Rome, while Italy could default if there is a prolonged slump. Impacts Economic hardship will threaten the popularity of the government. Funds still holding short positions on Italian sovereign assets will likely extend the rally in Italian bond prices as they ‘buy to cover’. European countries will harden their position on Italy’s fragility, making EU-level macroeconomic governance more difficult.
