Si plusieurs généraux de la Révolution ont eu des ambitions ou des velléités d'ambitions politiques, au prix parfois de contacts secrets avec l'ennemi, Desaix apparaît dans la réalité aussi désintéressé que le veut sa légende. Rallié à la République par patriotisme, il ignore l'émigration, qui compte pourtant en son sein des membres de sa propre famille, et son nom n' apparaît jamais dans aucun rapport des agents de la contre-Révolution en quête d'alliés possibles. S'il se rallie à Bonaparte et l'accompagne en Egypte, pays stratégique mais arriéré où, comme il l'écrit lui-même, il croit « porter le flambeau de la raison », c'est parce qu'il voit dans le vainqueur d'Italie un général républicain. Aurait-il été aussi « dévoué et fidèle » à l'Empereur que l'affirme celui-ci ? La question se pose.
