Les francs-maçons néerlandais ont-ils joué un rôle important dans la révolution batave ? C'est là un des points sur lesquels il importe de s'interroger. De fait, les francs-maçons de la République avaient exclu de leur loge politique et religion. S'y trouvaient des hommes de toutes tendances, que la révolution batave contraignit d'entrer malgré tout en politique. L'hypothèse est ici que les réformes apportées dans les années 1750 avaient déjà préparé les maçons à l'unité et à la centralisation, tandis que les pratiques démocratiques ne leur étaient pas inconnues. Mais ce qui valait dans la loge pouvait fort bien ne pas valoir dans la société. Avec la proclamation de la République batave, il s'avéra que les frères étaient divisés. Leur engagement politique n'était pas univoque.
