Abstract
Obsidian hydration dating is a method of dating obsidian artifacts based on the depth of the hydration layer formed by diffusion of water over time into the glass. The hydration rate is dependent on glass type and temperature. Originally proposed by Friedman and Smith in 1960, the original optical analytical technique yielded scattered, unreliable results. More recent analytical techniques using secondary ion mass spectrometry or Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy provide more reliable results. Uncertainties in temperature over time suggest that local calibrations may be needed, but when times are independently calibrated this can be inverted to yield integrated paleotemperatures.
