Abstract
Djanet Sears was born in London, England, and moved while a teenager to Saskatoon, in the Canadian prairies. Influenced by black women playwrights Ntozake Shange ( For Coloured Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf ) and Lorraine Hansberry ( A Raisin in the Sun ), she has worked as a writer, actor, and director and currently lives in Toronto. Harlem Duet , a prequel to Shakespeare’s Othello, was workshopped at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York City, where Sears spent a season as an international playwright in residence. In Canada, the play received its premier at Tarragon Theatre’s Extra Space, before being remounted at the Canadian Stage Theatre in 1997 by Nightwood Theatre, Canada’s oldest professional feminist theatre company. The play is a sequel to Afrika Solo ( 1990 ), the first published stage play by a Canadian woman of African descent. As Joanne Tompkins explains, Afrika Solo is an ‘auto-bio-mythography’ in which Sears, an ‘African Canadian, explores her search for a place in white-dominated Canada, using as tools the pop culture that surrounds her (particularly its bias against people of African descent) and the re-discovery of her spiritual past on a visit to Africa’ (35).
