Perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi yang begitu pesat di abad 21 salah satunya berimbas pada dunia pendidikan, khususnya pada pendidikan di Indonesia. Salah satu komponen penting dalam pendidikan adalah guru. Guru dalam konteks pendidikan mempunyai peranan yang besar karena guru berada di barisan terdepan dalam pelaksanaan pendidikan dan berhadapan langsung dengan peserta didik. Dengan kemajuan teknologi, berdampak pada fungsi utama guru yang mana tidak lagi hanya sebagai satu-satunya sumber informasi. Meskipun demikian, hal itu tetap tidak bisa menghilangkan peranan guru dalam proses pendidikan. Pada abad 21 ini, guru harus membekali kecakapan keterampilan dan kompetensi khusus yang tentu berbeda dengan guru di abad sebelumnya. Dengan melakukan akselerasi terhadap perkembangan informasi dan komunikasi dalam proses belajar mengajar diharapkan guru dapat mengatasi berbagai tantangan yang ada di abad 21 sekarang.
