Abstract
Au XIXe siècle, les lois britanniques sur les maladies contagieuses (Contagious Diseases Acts, 1864, 1866, 1869) étaient une réponse à la préoccupation grandissante de la diffusion des maladies vénériennes au Royaume-Uni. Contestées pour leurs applications controversées, incluant des examens médicaux obligatoires et des périodes de réclusion forcée, cet article questionne les inégalités de genre et de classe au cœur du régime de ségrégation sociale et spatiale. L’hypothèse proposée est que le système de surveillance, de contrôle et d’enfermement mis en place par les dispositions des Contagious Diseases Acts a concouru à instaurer une économie de la contagion fondée sur l’hypervisibilité de la sexualité des prostituées et leur invisibilité.
