Cet article explore les ressorts rhétoriques et pratiques de l’autonomie technologique. Il s’appuie sur une recherche conduite autour des activités d’un organisme de formation prônant l’autoconstruction de machines agricoles, l’ Atelier Paysan . Il montre tout d’abord une pluralité de modes d’existence de l’autonomie : une autonomie dotée d’une épaisseur politique, prônée par les formateurs, et une autonomie plus pragmatique pour les agriculteurs. Seront ensuite mises en évidence l’importance des outils et des fournitures mobilisés lors des formations, constituant l’infrastructure de toute activité de construction et de maintenance. L’article argumente ainsi en faveur d’une prise en compte accrue de la dimension matérielle des processus d’autonomisation.
