Abstract
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores some fascinating continuities between Augustine and the themes of Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. It provides a comparison of Augustine’s approach to living in truth on the one hand with that of the Czech statesman, Vaclav Havel. The book explores the notion of a “redeemed hybridity” wherein the contrast with the unconfused two natures of the Christological formula of Chalcedon serves to illuminate and liberate racially “hybrid” persons. It describes a contrast that exists between the Cartesian self and the Augustinian account of personhood, whereby otherness is not an intra-human reality that divides people from the stranger but rather a distinction of the difference between humans and the transcendent God. The book focuses on the storied theme of sexual desire in Augustine and finds that his view supports not only fidelity in marriage but also the equality of women.
