Cet article essaie de mettre à profit l’analyse de l’« énonciation impersonnelle » du cinéma dans une perspective qui s’ouvre à la question de l’éthique. Des aspects élémentaires de l’analyse du film comme phénomène de communication sont d’abord présentés. Puis est suggérée l’existence d’une éthique « impersonnelle » ou « spectrale » à l’œuvre dans le film comme texte. La communication au cinéma suppose, du côté de la réception, une lecture plus ou moins libre de ce texte, et l’« éthique impersonnelle » du film se mesurerait à partir des types d’invitations que le spectateur en reçoit. Cette invitation se manifeste sur les « plans de l’expression et du contenu », qui sont ici envisagés sous l’angle de la directivité. La corrélation de ces plans est considérée dans sa tensivité variable : étant plus ou moins directif sur le plan du contenu et de l’expression quant aux lectures possibles auxquelles le spectateur pourra se prêter, le texte filmique est plus ou moins « programmatique » ou « thématique », plus ou moins « énoncif » ou « énonciatif ». Le type de relation que l’émetteur et le texte entretiennent avec le récepteur est par là défini, de même que, par conséquent, l’aspect éthique de la communication filmique.
