Abstract
Cet article traite des périphrases à valeur progressive ‹ être après INF› et ‹ être en train de INF›. La première était en usage dans les français d’Europe au temps de l’extension coloniale au xvii e siècle. Elle s’entend sporadiquement, encore aujourd’hui, en français québécois spontané, en parallèle à ‹ être en train de INF›. On s’intéresse ici aux valeurs exprimées par ces deux périphrases, à quelques décennies d’intervalle. La comparaison porte sur leur utilisation au début des années 1970 et à l’époque actuelle. Par-delà un renversement de leur fréquence d’usage durant cette période, les périphrases étudiées ont été et sont toujours conceptuellement équivalentes. On considère que la faible fréquence de la catégorie « progressivité » en français a facilité l’abandon graduel de ‹ être après INF› au profit de ‹ être en train de INF›, qui s’est peu à peu imposée comme forme normée.
