Abstract
Forfattere i 900-tallets frankiske Europa levede i en turbulent tid, hvor magtkonstellationerne undergik en markant forandring. Det langvarige karolingiske overherredømme var under afvikling, og efterhånden etablerede et nyt ottonsk dynasti sig som toneangivende i de frankiske riger. Med den østfrankiske hersker Otto I’s sejr over de hedenske ungarer ved Lechfeld i 955 fik ottonerne momentum. Og med samme Ottos erhvervelse af kejsertitlen i 962 var den karolingiske æra endegyldigt til ende. Netop i den succesrige Ottos rige blomstrede historieskrivningen op efter et 50-årigt fravær. Inden for en relativt kort periode (ca. 958-970) blev der skrevet fem historiske narrativer om herskeren eller rigets historie. Heri fremstår Otto I’s og hans far Henrik I som forbilledlige og uomtvisteligt legitime herskere. I denne afhandling udforsker jeg mulige årsager til brud og udviklinger i 900-tallets østfrankiske historieskrivning med særligt fokus på herskerrepræsentation. Her undersøger jeg med afsæt i en komparation af 900-tallets byzantinske og østfrankiske historieskrivning, hvorvidt byzantinsk forfatterpraksis tjente som forbillede for østfrankiske forfattere.
