Abstract

Dans cet article nous aborderons une controverse québécoise entourant la représentation à Montréal du spectacle SLĀV, conçu par la chanteuse Betty Bonifassi dans une mise en scène de Robert Lepage. Ce théâtre musical, inspiré du chant des esclaves afro-américains, se voulait une histoire de l’esclavage à travers le monde et un hommage à cet art issu de conditions inhumaines. Des groupes de pression y virent toutefois une énième manifestation du colonialisme culturel et dénoncèrent le fait que la production était entièrement occupée par des artistes Blancs. La polémique, qui divisa profondément la société québécoise, dura plusieurs mois. Inspiré par les mots du sociologue Gérald Bronner, pour qui « défendre la rationalité, c’est défendre un monde intellectuel commun », notre étude se donne pour objectif d’interroger la place de la rationalité dans une polémique qui met en jeu des contenus émotifs et des rapports de force institutionnels.
