Abstract
Inventeur touche à tout, Georgia Knap dévoile au public en janvier 1907 une fabuleuse maison électrique aménagée à Troyes. Cette maison et ses nombreuses descriptions fondent le mythe du récit initial, voire initiatique, du cicérone Knap conduisant le lecteur et le visiteur à la découverte de son invention. Démultipliée par des installations successives d’appartements électriques à Paris, le récit devient un véritable roman-feuilleton de la maison électrique. Pour Knap, le récit est un formidable outil de communication publicitaire : multipliant les épisodes et les supports, il entretient l’attention du public par des publications quasi-quotidiennes. Une dizaine d’années après l’émergence de la maison électrique les publications s’espacent puis disparaissent, la maison électrique tombe dans l’oubli sans pour autant qu’on connaisse réellement sa date de fermeture. Le récit de Knap semble alors être une histoire sans fin.
