Abstract
This chapter continues to track Buck and Bubbles’s sputtering career in the 1940s. The modest success of <italic>Cabin in the Sky</italic> reawakened their prospects for a while, particularly within the quixotic campaigns of those trying desperately to mount a vaudeville revival. In the midst of bracing personal vicissitudes—the death of his beloved mother and the tempestuous relationship he had with a woman who bore him a daughter—Bubbles found an oasis of stability in 1945 when he and Buck joined the touring company of <italic>Carmen Jones</italic>, an all-Black production based on Georges Bizet’s beloved opera <italic>Carmen</italic>. For two years this job gave them steady work in theaters throughout the United States and Canada. But <italic>Carmen Jones</italic> offered none of the opportunities or adulation that Bubbles had enjoyed in <italic>Porgy and Bess</italic>. He and Buck were given small comic roles which they fulfilled adequately, nothing more.
