Cet article défend la pertinence intellectuelle et sociale de relire aujourd’hui Esdras Minville (1896-1975). Son œuvre permet de mieux comprendre le Québec contemporain tout en stimulant l’imagination politique. En contrastant méthodiquement la modernisation du Canada français que Minville appelait de ses vœux avec celle du Québec réalisée durant la Révolution tranquille, nous exposons à la fois les idées ayant façonné le Québec contemporain et celles qu’il a rejetées. Minville envisageait le Canada français comme une manifestation nationale particulière de la civilisation occidentale, indissociable de la conception catholique du bien. Entre 1920 et 1960, environ, ce positionnement l’a appelé à défendre le corporatisme social, la coopération économique et un aménagement territorial axé sur le développement des campagnes. Envisageant plutôt le Québec comme une démocratie libérale à laïciser, la Révolution tranquille a quant à elle privilégié la social-démocratie, la grande entreprise privée et les sociétés d’État, ainsi que l’urbanisation.
