Très répandues au sein des cours d’eau contemporains, la nature des retenues de seuil est encore mal comprise et les Sciences de l’eau peinent à les placer au sein des autres milieux aquatiques continentaux. Certains les voient comme des tronçons de cours d’eau dégradés, qui ont perdu totalement ou partiellement les traits typiques des milieux lotiques ; d’autres les perçoivent comme de véritables écosystèmes, qui possèdent des fonctionnalités propres et qui jouent un rôle au sein des dynamiques environnementales. Dans une recherche que nous avons récemment publiée, nous assimilons le fonctionnement des retenues de seuil à celui des écotones et, dans cet article, nous souhaitons mieux développer notre théorie. En effet, ces deux types d’environnements sont gouvernés par des gradients environnementaux et présentent les mêmes fonctionnalités, c’est-à-dire la capacité à filtrer la matière, à stocker et redistribuer les substances et à constituer un véritable habitat pour différents types d’organismes. Cette nouvelle vision des retenues de seuil peut même s’étendre à d’autres milieux aquatiques construits par l’homme, à titre d’exemple les étangs. Elle ouvre d’intéressantes perspectives de recherche et offre une nouvelle approche de gestion, qui ne considère plus ce type d’environnement comme un simple obstacle au sein des fleuves et rivières, mais comme des milieux intégrés dans les paysages fluviatiles d’aujourd’hui et avec leurs propres fonctionnalités.
