Notre article examine l’interprétation offerte par Benoît Lévesque du modèle québécois de développement, en nous basant tant sur ses travaux que sur les idées structurantes dans certaines des communautés d’interrogation auxquelles il a pris part, pour ensuite situer cette interprétation, ces idées et ces communautés dans le contexte socio-économique et politique du Québec durant les quatre dernières décennies. Nous commençons avec une présentation de certains concepts centraux mobilisés dans les recherches de Lévesque, en prêtant particulièrement attention aux liens établis entre la régulation, l’innovation et l’économie sociale. Nous mettons ensuite en lumière l’analyse élaborée par Lévesque des transformations du modèle québécois de développement au cours des quatre dernières décennies, en prenant notamment en compte la récession économique mondiale du début des années 1980 et son impact politique et social. Nous présentons ensuite des débats entourant le rôle de l’économie sociale au Québec, ainsi que des réflexions de Lévesque sur l’évolution récente du modèle de développement québécois et les trois générations d’innovations sociales. Ces débats et ces réflexions nous permettent de conclure en proposant des pistes de prolongement des travaux de Lévesque.
