El Semanario de Santiago es una publicación impulsada por José Victorino Lastarria en 1842-1843. Entre las múltiples temáticas que trata, se encuentra la de la “enfermedad”, sobre todo, por las repercusiones sociales que tenían, por entonces, las oleadas que diversos males causaban a la población urbana (escarlatina, malaria, viruela). El presente artículo aborda el tratamiento que se da a esta situación desde la perspectiva de una nueva intelectualidad) que emerge al interior de la discusión pública, posibilitando un discurso periodístico que abre al camino al desarrollo incipiente de los géneros de opinión. Para contextualizar la situación sanitaria del país, se recogen los aportes de Laval y Caffarena, atendiendo principalmente al origen de las primeras políticas públicas en materia sanitaria.
