Malgré son importance dans l’histoire politique récente des États-Unis et son étonnante résilience, le « trumpisme » demeure un objet politique difficile à définir. Parmi les différentes appellations qui lui sont généralement associées, ce chapitre introductif privilégie l’illibéralisme. Ce prisme d’analyse offre en effet l’avantage de pointer une continuité entre le « trumpisme » et les éléments les moins libéraux de la tradition américaine, tout en saisissant la singularité de ce président atypique, affichant une opposition résolue aux aspects les plus libéraux – au sens politique, économique, et culturel – de l’histoire américaine. Ainsi, le « trumpisme » apparaît comme la variante américaine d’un nouveau paradigme politique très caractéristique de notre époque.
