Abstract

Kai Kaarniranta discusses the state of the Journal. Nattinen et al. in Tampere review the use of proteomics for analysis of tear film and health of the ocular surface. Magno et al. in Norway, The Netherlands, Sweden, UK, USA, New Zealand find that currently available chambered warm moist air eyelid warming devices are safe and effective at raising eyelid temperature to therapeutic levels and improving signs and symptoms of dry eye. However, it is not clear if they provide a greater benefit than other eyelid warming therapies. Van Beek et al. in The Netherlands recommend fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy for small-, medium- and large-sized uveal melanomas with 5-year local tumour control of 92%. Kreku and Behndig in Umea noticed that mechanical pupil dilation during cataract surgery is associated with a more complicated intraand postoperative course with more follow-up visits and requires more anti-inflammatory treatment postoperatively. Sand et al. in Oslo report that cataract surgery with primary IOL implantation before 12 weeks of age results in a high number of operations for visual axis opacification. Co-existent persistent foetal vasculature was common. The incidence of secondary glaucoma was similar to other studies. Vaajanen et al. in Finland and Sweden found that the incidence of reported visual impairment due to glaucoma has increased during the 40 years of the Finnish Registry for Visual Impairment. However, the risk of treated glaucoma patients becoming visually impaired has decreased. Viberg et al. in Umea report that Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy is associated with the cytosine-thymine-guanine (CTG)n repeat expansion in the transcription factor 4 (TCF4) gene. Naslund et al. in Umea compared two annular epithelium-on high oxygen photorefractive intrastromal cross-linking illuminations protocols for treatment of low-grade myopia. A larger reduction of myopia and less early posttreatment subjective ocular discomfort can be seen with a smaller treatment zone. Bro and Hammarfelt in Sweden analyzed editorial data from Acta Ophthalmologica containing all manuscript submissions between 2010 and 2020. The study revealed an increase in submitted manuscripts over the last decade, with a further increase during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proportion of desk-rejected manuscripts grew, and the reviewer pool expanded, which allowed the annual average number of reviews by individual reviewers to remain stable. Hollander et al. in Groningen found that upper blepharoplasty alleviates subjective dry eye complaints in the long term, while not changing the tear dynamics. The improvement was independent of the blepharoplasty technique used. Loukovaara et al. in Finland suggest that the use of second-generation calcium channel blockers could be associated with an increased risk for wet AMD development. Hansen et al. in Denmark conclude that proteome studies support a multifactorial pathogenesis of DME as proteins with highly different biological functions are regulated in DME. Alba-Linero et al. in Spain and UK describe the involvement of Epstein–Barr Virus in diseases of the ocular anterior segment. Epstein–Barr Virus is implicated in salmon coloured conjunctival masses, haemorrhagic conjunctivitis and different types of keratitis. Magnier et al. in France, Australia and Hong Kong reviewed the efficacy of preventive treatment against allograft rejection after endothelial keratoplasty. Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) has less risk of graft rejection compared with DS(A)EK/UT-DSAEK. Soft steroids may be an alternative to standard steroids to prevent graft rejection after DMEK. Petersen et al. in Denmark studied training with a virtual reality vitreoretinal simulator. There was no positive skill transfer from basic skills training to the procedure-specific modules in time.. Aspiring vitreoretinal surgeons should go directly to simulation-based training of procedures. Langenbucher et al. in Germany, Hungary, UK and Austria set up a deep learning algorithm, which predicts thetotal corneal power from keratometry and biometric measures. The neural network could be used to account for the corneal back surface astigmatism for biometers where the corneal back surface measurement or total keratometry is not available. Sandali et al. in France describe early postoperative corneal map profiles providing insight into the pathogenesis of postoperative corneal swelling and possible prevention strategies. By improving visualization of the narrow surgical space in patients with shallow anterior chambers, the three-dimensional digital visualization system could help to minimize postoperative corneal oedema. Dastiridou et al. in Greece used OCT angiography to study retinal vasculature and found influence from age and signal strength. Stoor et al. in Oulu compared the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fibre layer parameters and image quality parameters obtained by Cirrus HD-OCT, GDxECC and HRT3 in a populationbased screening study. Lemmens et al. in Belgium investigated the association between retinal vessel complexity and age and studies the effects of cardiovascular health determinants. They propose using a cubic trend with age, refractive error and smoking behaviour when interpreting retinal vessel complexity. Wagner et al. in Germany found no statistically significant differences between trabeculectomy, XEN45 gel stent implantation and Preserflo MicroShunt implantation regarding surgical success after 6 months. Yet reduction in intraocular pressure was significantly higher in the trabeculectomy group. Schlatter et al. in Austria demonstrated that filtering surgery can reduce the progression of VF in patients with open-angle glaucoma, especially those whose disease develops aggressively. Flockerzi et al. in Germany, Italy, UK, USA and Brazil describe a novel Corvis-derived parameter, which provides a biomechanical staging for ectasia/KC potentially enhancing the ABCD staging and may detect abnormalities before tomographic changes. Caporossi et al. in Italy compare subretinal implant of human amniotic membrane or subretinal injection of tissue plasminogen activator for submacular massive haemorrhage. Both techniques report similar VA improvements and postoperative complications. Liukkonen et al. report that ET-1, IL-8 and TGF-b2 appear to be useful serum biomarkers in understanding active wet AMD. Farahvash et al. in Canada suggest that gas tamponades stretched the retina by displacing subretinal fluid following RRD repair. Tichotova et al. in Czeck Republic, Norway, Spain, and Germany found that retinal pigment epitheliums cultured on polylactide nanofibrous membranes improved the final quality of the cell product by having better maturation and long-term survival of the RPE monolayer compared to those cultured on commercial polyester scaffolds. Vasanthananthan in Rotterdam and Singapore address misconceptions in DMEK surgery. Korhonen et al. in Finland and Sweden consider the impact of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (sildenafil) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy?
