Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by a progressive reduction in kidney function. In this condition, acid accumulates and is buffered by bone and muscle, leading to bone demineralization and protein catabolism.1 Eventually, the increased protein catabolism results in disturbances in skeletal muscle, with reduction in muscle mass and muscle strength, and worsening of physical function. Reduction in physical function begins early in the disease process and is associated with increased mortality risk.
