Abstract
Au cours du 18 e siècle, une prise de conscience des conséquences de l’action humaine sur le climat et de l’épuisement de certaines ressources apparaît. Certains naturalistes s’inquiètent du déboisement des forêts, ou encore de la stérilité des terres agricoles du Royaume. En même temps, de nombreux missionnaires et botanistes sont envoyés en Amérique, et ils témoignent, à l’inverse, de l’extrême abondance et fertilité du Nouveau Monde, décrit comme un paradis terrestre qui s’offrirait aux Français. Cet article entend montrer en quels termes la nature américaine est décrite dans la littérature viatique, et comment les discours sur son abondance promeuvent en réalité son exploitation et son défrichement, en vue d’en contrôler le climat et de remédier à la stérilité de l’Ancien Monde.
