Abstract
Dans cet article, nous nous intéressons à l’impact diégétique et à l’investissement topographique de l’élément aquatique dans l’œuvre romanesque d’Anne Hébert. Notre intérêt principal vise à définir les deux trajectoires antagonistes de cet élément naturel : son rôle en tant qu’adjuvant à la survie des personnages et son impact en tant que force criminelle, lieu d’enfermement et source de tortures. Dans un premier temps, nous verrons de quelle manière l’auteure québécoise passe d’une description de l’eau comme décor ambivalent à une réification répétée des personnages humains, qu’elle n’a de cesse de soumettre à la volonté de la nature. Parallèlement, nous tiendrons compte des stratégies visant à anthropomorphiser l’eau pour, finalement, dévoiler les ressorts de l’articulation de ses deux visages contradictoires (en tant que force amie ou ennemie), volonté active qui tire les ficelles diégétiques de ces dix romans.
