Cet article fait état des constats dégagés à la suite de démarches d’entrée sur les terrains d’enquête menées par deux équipes de recherche avec la méthode photovoix. D’après le portrait que ses précurseurs en ont brossé, cette méthode rejoint le courant de la recherche-action participative. Elle représente ainsi un choix judicieux pour comprendre les besoins des jeunes vulnérables et stimuler leur pouvoir d’agir. Notre expérience entourant la mise en oeuvre de cette méthode auprès de cette population a révélé divers défis, enjeux et questionnements qui nous ont incité les deux premières auteures à revisiter les écrits sur le sujet. Les résultats de notre recension révèlent la présence d’une pratique qui consiste à adapter grandement la méthode photovoix lorsqu’elle est utilisée auprès de jeunes vulnérables. Or ces adaptations posent le risque de limiter la portée émancipatrice de la méthode. Elles interrogent ainsi la capacité des personnes chercheuses et des institutions à l’exploiter pleinement.
