Abstract
Du début des années 1920 à la fin des années 1950, la fête de Dollard des Ormeaux le troisième lundi de mai fut célébrée non seulement au Québec, mais également dans d’autres provinces canadiennes. Au Manitoba, elle fut implantée dans le milieu scolaire par des organisations qui représentaient la future élite franco-manitobaine (Union canadienne de Saint-Boniface, cercles locaux de l’ACJC). Elle consista en une appropriation stratégique du sauveur de la Nouvelle-France des manuels d’histoire dans le contexte de la loi Thornton (1916), imposant l’anglais dans les écoles publiques du Manitoba. Pourtant, ce modèle de résistance inculqué à la jeune génération ne servit pas de fondement au récit des origines de la présence française dans l’Ouest, d’où le déclin de sa commémoration à Saint-Boniface et sa disparition de la mémoire franco-manitobaine, à la différence de symboles identitaires comme La Vérendrye, les coureurs des bois et Riel.
