AC Discharges in Contact With Water Solutions of Varying Electrical Conductivity: Characterization of Electrical and Optical Properties

Abstract
Plasma–liquid systems are involved in many fields of application. In this study, we characterize the electrical and optical properties of an ac discharge produced in the air that is in contact with water. The electrical conductivity of water is adjusted by adding KCl, H <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sub> SO <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">4</sub> , or NaOH. The temporal evolution of voltage and current waveforms is presented, and some parameters of interest, namely, breakdown voltage, voltage drop, discharge current, and injected charge and energy, are reported under anode and cathode water polarity conditions. The optical properties of the plasma emission are also acquired, and their temporal evolution is analyzed using a photomultiplier tube (PMT) equipped with specific wavelength filters. The trends and relationships elucidated herein are highly useful in developing plasma applications, such as water processing.
