Abstract
Cet article propose une approche temporelle de la correspondance de Charles VIII fondée sur une analyse lexicométrique. S’appuyant sur la notion d’« épistolaire politique », il met en évidence trois niveaux de temporalité du discours : les rythmes d’écriture, le régime de temporalité propre à la gouvernance épistolaire et l’évolution des structures sémantiques de cette correspondance. Le recours à l’analyse factorielle des correspondances montre une résistance à une évolution chronologique « classique » du lexique. Loin d’être l’indice d’une absence de temporalité, celle-ci reflète les rapports complexes de la lettre avec le contexte politique et la gestion du royaume, ainsi qu’un régime de temporalité propre à la période étudiée. L’analyse des évolutions sémantiques sur une durée longue révèle, elle, des thématiques structurantes qui accompagnent la construction des figures du roi de guerre et de paix, père du peuple.
