Abstract
In June 1988, Gwich’in from communities across northeastern Alaska, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories gathered in Arctic Village, Alaska. The gathering was an urgent response to the Ronald Reagan administration plan to drill in the Arctic Refuge. This chapter explains why the event marked a crucial moment in the history of Gwich’in political advocacy, sparking what many described as “the rebirth of a nation” and leading to the formation of the Gwich’in Steering Committee. For the Gwich’in, the gathering represented a collective effort to prevent cultural genocide. The chapter includes stories and voices of Sarah James, Norma Kassi, and Jonathon Solomon. It also explains how they sought to build a coalition of conscience composed of diverse groups. At the gathering, Gwich’in leaders announced their support for wilderness protection of the Arctic Refuge coastal plain—though their ideas of wilderness, and their reasons for wanting to protect this land, differed from the ideas and vision of the mainstream conservation movement.
