Abstract
Significance Trudeau has introduced a number of measures since Canada’s worst mass shooting in 2020, when 22 people were killed in Nova Scotia. His latest move, which freezes the sale, transfer and importing of handguns, came in the wake of the shooting of 19 children at a school in Uvalde, Texas on May 24. Impacts The latest measures affect legal gun ownership but will not address the rise in access to illegal firearms. States that have fractious relations with Ottawa, notably Alberta and Saskatchewan, will object to yet more gun restrictions. Conservative leadership candidates will use Liberal gun ownership restrictions to raise funds from rural supporters. Conservatives may campaign on loosening some ownership restrictions at the next election, but are not likely to include handguns.
