Un scandale de corruption, des élus accusés de clientélisme, de favoritisme, d’affairisme, de liens avec le crime organisé… La scène se passe-t-elle n’importe où ? Pas forcément, car il y a des villes où ces dénonciations sont plus fréquentes qu’ailleurs, des villes maudites qui finissent par avoir une mauvaise réputation. Cet ouvrage analyse les mises en accusation des phénomènes d’improbité publique qui se prolongent dans une stigmatisation de certaines villes ainsi considérées comme corruptrices et corrompues. Il explore différentes époques (depuis la fin du xixe siècle à nos jours) et plusieurs espaces européens et nord-américains : les villes étasuniennes des machines politiques (New York, Boston, Chicago), Glasgow au Royaume-Uni, Montréal au Canada, Naples en Italie, Marseille en France. Un traitement spécifique est réservé à cette dernière avec quatre chapitres qui saisissent l’invention et la consolidation de sa mauvaise réputation sur une très longue durée.
