Abstract
Cet article propose d’examiner dans la seigneurie de Saint-Hyacinthe du début du 19e siècle, une région de peuplement récent, certains aspects démographiques, économiques et sociaux du prolétariat rural en s’intéressant aux chefs de famille identifiés comme journaliers dans les registres de l’état civil de 1800 à 1831 et dans le recensement de 1831. Leur itinéraire révèle des liens étroits avec le monde des cultivateurs. Leurs avoirs fonciers et mobiliers sont comparables à ceux de la frange plus pauvre de la paysannerie maskoutaine à laquelle on peut aussi les identifier, à différentes reprises, au cours de leur cycle de vie.
