Le livre animé permet de pénétrer l’univers du mouvement et de la profondeur de la page. Il n’est plus un objet plat. Le lecteur est invité à manipuler les éléments de la page. La structure interactive des livres d’images à mécanismes offre des possibilités d'interaction. Les pages prennent du volume, des images surgissent des ouvrages, se déploient, s’envolent, s’animent. Il contient des mécanismes le rendant interactif. Il se réinvente, souvent comparé à une architecture. Tout comme le codex est apparu à un stade de la progression du livre, des changements dans la conception non linéaire du temps ont donné au livre un caractère mouvant, magique, lui offrant un nouvel aspect, car le mouvement permet au livre de se dégager des contraintes du codex. L’interactivité est une nouvelle forme d’expérience visuelle et de perception de l’art qui englobe désormais le tactile. Le livre d’artiste, plus que tout autre type de livre, demande une appréhension active de l’objet, tant au niveau perceptif que cognitif. Le livre d’artiste, sous toutes ses formes, appelle à une connaissance par les sens et par la raison. Il nécessite une réflexion, un décodage des éléments mis à notre disposition pour révéler le propos de l’artiste qui se cache au-delà des mots.
