Abstract
Jane Rule's work has taken me to many communities.Some-Galiano Island, Toronto, Vancouver, the San Francisco Bay Area-are on the map; others are created by her friends, her coworkers, and her readers, some named, many anonymous.In her work and in her life, Jane Rule-after long years before publication, when she felt she was writing in isolation, without an audiencehas been a community builder.I'd like to thank her and Helen Sonthoff for welcoming me into their community on Galiano Island, and for the good food, plentiful drink, and intense conversations that marked our visits together.Whatever reservations Jane might have about
