Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Over the typical 3-year primary mirror (M1) recoating schedule at the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), throughput losses due to contamination and degradation of the M1 bare-aluminum coating exceeding 0.4 mag in U band are observed with MegaCam. It is hypothesized that extended periods of wet weather, leading to clusters of heavy condensation events on the primary mirror, leads to accelerated degradation of the bare aluminum coatings. In a preemptive effort to address this problem, a dry air purge system was implemented for the CFHT M1, prior to CFHT M1 recoating in 2020. Additionally, a camera system was implemented to detect condensation on the primary mirror using a simple image processing algorithm. As of May 2022, no significant condensation events have been observed on the CFHT M1.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
